Papa John's International

Overview
Papa John’s International, headquartered in Louisville, Ky., is the world’s third-largest pizza company, owning and franchising approximately 3,000 restaurants in 49 states and 22 countries. For six years running, consumers have rated Papa John's no. 1 in customer satisfaction among all national Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) chains in the highly regarded American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI).

The Papa John’s Story
As a high school student working at a local pizza pub in Jeffersonville, Ind., Papa John’s founder John Schnatter realized that there was something missing from national pizza chains: a superior-quality traditional pizza delivered to the customer’s door. His dream was to one day open a pizza restaurant that would fill that void.

So in 1984, “Papa” John Schnatter knocked out a broom closet located in the back of his father’s tavern, sold his prized 1972 Z28 Camaro, purchased $1,600 worth of used restaurant equipment, and began selling his pizzas to the tavern’s customers. The customers loved the pizza so much that John was able to expand into adjoining space, eventually leading to the opening of the first Papa John’s restaurant in 1985.

More than 25 years and nearly 3,000 restaurants later, Papa John’s remains focused on using the highest-quality ingredients to serve its customers superior-quality products including original, thin and pan crust pizzas, breadsticks, cheesesticks, Papa’s Chickenstrips, Papa’s Wings, fresh salads, and Sweatreat desert offerings.

Papa John’s makes the crust of every traditional pizza with fresh dough (never frozen) prepared with clear-filtered water in the company’s regional quality control centers. Papa John’s uses only fresh-packed tomato sauce made from vine-ripened tomatoes, which go from the vine to the can in an average of six hours; cheese made from 100% mozzarella; 100% real beef and pork that contain no fillers; tender all-white meat chicken; and other high-quality toppings.

Diversity Philosophy
Papa John’s diversity philosophy is based on its core values, FASPAC:

  • Focus: We must keep The Main Thing, The Main Thing. We’ll consistently deliver a traditional Papa John’s superior-quality pizza.
  • Accountability: We do what we say we are going to do when we say we are going to do it.
  • Superiority: At Papa John’s, we expect excellence – the “best in its class” – in everything we do.
  • PAPA: People Are Priority Always. Our success depends on our ability, as a team, to work together to achieve goals and expectations.
Attitude: If you think you can or think you can’t – you’re right! Successful team members must be upbeat, proactive and passionate about everything we do.
  • Constant Improvement: We never stop trying to surpass our previous best. No matter how good we are, we will always get better.

Operating in 49 states and 22 countries, Papa John’s has a strong presence servicing customers in many diverse markets. However, the company recognizes that minority ownership is under represented in its portfolio of franchisees. Papa John’s is currently developing programs and processes to attract minority franchisees, and corporate and restaurant Team Members, to better reflect the communities where it does business, and to adhere to the basic tenants of its core values.

“The brief history of Papa John’s is truly amazing, and it exemplifies the classic American Dream. Papa John had a vision, and with hard work and dedication, he turned the company into a huge success,” said Nigel Travis, Papa John’s President and CEO. “We recognize though, that for Papa John’s to continue to grow and prosper we need to reach out to the ever-increasing minority population to increase our franchisee, employee, and customer base, and tap into those markets where we currently are under represented.

“Not only do our developing plans for diversifying our franchise and Team Member base make sound business and economic sense, but it will enable us to support new communities and help develop the next generation of loyal, successful Papa John’s franchisees, Team Members, and customers.”

Community Involvement
Having a significant presence in hundreds of communities around the country, Papa John’s prides itself on being a model corporate citizen and taking a leading role in community and charitable activities at both the corporate and local level.

Papa John’s strongly encourages its franchisees to get involved in their local communities and sponsor or donate to local schools and universities, sports teams, community associations and charitable organizations. On the local level, franchisees give back to the community in many ways including donating pizzas to a particular cause or organization, assisting in fundraisers, or involvement in any number of local giving campaigns.

At the corporate level, Papa John’s enjoys an outstanding relationship with the state of Kentucky, and the city of Louisville, including partnerships with the University of Kentucky, and the University of Louisville. Some of Papa John’s other philanthropic efforts include:

  • Papa John’s Scholars: Papa John’s has awarded more than $5 million in college scholarships through its scholarship program, Papa John’s Scholars.
